While watching the video of Barbara Walters interviewing Thomas Beatie, the pregnant man, I could not believe that I had not heard about this before. I was convinced that I must be living in a bubble and therefore, it motivated further research. It was interesting to research whether a man (who was not born biologically female) could carry a baby to term. According to Lee Silver (2008), a professor of molecular biology at Princeton University, it is possible for a man to become pregnant but not in the traditional manner. He (2008) states that approximately one in ten thousand pregnancies in women develop in the abdomen in place of the uterus because the embryo never makes it the entire way to the uterus. He (2008) also says this is dangerous as embryonic tissues mix with the tissue of the organ that the egg is implanted in and it is very difficult to tell the difference between the two. The risk lies with attempting to detach the embryonic material and causing bad bleeding.(2008) This subject is quite controversial; there is much disagreement in the literature as to whether it is safe for a man to be pregnant, explains Silver (2008).
Because Thomas Beatie was the first man to be publicly pregnant, it is quite difficult to find information on the possibility of men to be pregnant. I researched for literature pointing to a safe way for men to become pregnant and came up empty-handed. There is also a shortage of academic journal articles written on the topic and therefore, a lack of research being conducted in the area. If a safe way was devised for men to become pregnant, it would have an
