Jack Merridew In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Jack is the antagonist and he is selfish when it comes to accepting others opinions. Jack has a desire to do what he wants regardless of what others think. Jack has the tendency to want everything to go his way and he wants to be in charge. “We’ll hunt. I’m going to be chief” (Golding 133). This quote shows that he wants to be in charge and that he wants things to go his way. Jack does whatever he wants because of the urge he has to want everything to go his way. “The conch doesn’t count on this end of the island---“(Golding150). This quote shows how he makes up his own ideas and how he does whatever he pleases even though he knows that the conch applies to everyone and it’s the symbol of leadership. Jack does what he pleases and doesn’t consider the feelings of others. For example “you came sneaking up like a thief and stole piggy’s glasses” (Golding 176). This shows how Jack stole piggy’s glasses and didn’t even think that piggy wouldn’t be able to see and also he never thought to ask if he could borrow Piggy’s glasses. Jack doesn’t even think twice about what he does he just does it without thinking and he thinks he is right all the time.
