Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Quentin Tarantino was raised by a single mother in Los Angeles, during which time, he was primarily surrounded by African Americans and the thriving culture following the civil rights era. Young Quentin Tarantino had African American women for baby sitters as well as a number of African American male role models, some of whom dated his mother. Consequently, Tarantino spent much of his youth during the 1970s going to movie theaters in African American communities, which were the exclusive venues for blaxploitation film.
