Mental disorder- a prolonged or recurring problem that seriously interferes with an individual’s ability to live satisfying personal life and function adequately
Anxiety disorder- s condition characterized by an individual feeling anxiety that is out of proportion to the danger elicited by an object or situation, and the anxiety interferes with the persons normal daily functioning
Causes of Abnormal Behavior
In the middle ages mental disorders were thought to be the result of demons or devils who inhabited individuals and made them do strange and horrible things. In the 1600s, mental disorders were thought to involve witches, who were believed to speak to the devil
Biological Factors
Genetic factors-contribute to the development of mental disorders are unlearned or inherited tendencies that influence how a person thinks, behaves, and feels
In the 1960s, one major cause of mental disorders was thought to be environmental factors, such as stressful events.in the 1990s came advances in studying genetic of living brains. As a result, current researchers and clinicians believe that mental disorders, such as Dennis Radar, results from a number of factors which include biological, cognitive- emotional behavior, and environmental influences.
Cognitive-Emotional-Behavioral & Environmental Factors
Cognitive-Emotional-Behavioral & Environmental Factors- that contribute the development of mental disorders include deficits in cognitive processing emotional stimuli, such as under or overreacting to emotional situations; behavioral problems, such as lacking social skills; and environmental challenges, such as dealing with stressful situations.
Statically frequency approach-a behavior may be considered abnormal if it occurs rarely or infrequently in relation to the behaviors to the general population
Social norms approach-a behavior is considered abnormal if it deviates greatly from accepted social standards, values or norms.
Maladaptive behavior approach- psychology damaging or abnormal it if interferes with individuals ability to function in his or her personal life or in society.
Clinical assessment- a systematic evaluation of an individual’s various psychological, biological, biological and social factors, as well as the identification of past and present problems, stressors, and other cognitive or behavioral symptoms
