Course Description
This course provides an overview of human behaviour in organizations, coupled with a more applied view of how management and organizational behaviour theory work in an organizational setting. Building on the learning outcomes from 75-100 and 71-100, the course further investigates the firm from the point of view of its people. Heavily oriented to learning and practicing leadership and team skills, the course gives special focus to the individual and group aspects of organizational behaviour through the exploration of personality, values, vision and ethics, diversity, motivation, leadership, decision making, communication and conflict resolution. Leveraging diversity and navigating organizational change provide the context for the course. The course will provide experiential opportunities to develop team and leadership skills. Credit cannot be obtained for both 71-240 and 71-340; Students must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
Course Pre-requisites
It is your responsibility to withdraw from this course during the two week add/drop period if you have NOT successfully passed the following pre-requisite courses: 75-100 – Introduction to Business 71-100 – Business Communications
Failure to withdraw will result in your automatic withdrawal by the Registrar’s Office at any time during the term. NOTE: The student is responsible for fees and tuition incurred for the course until the withdrawal date.
Orientation of Course:

This course will combine traditional reading-lecture-examination components with an intensive and non-traditional team-based learning experience. A major emphasis of this course is the development of personal leadership. Students will complete a personal leadership development workbook and through this process they will specify their development needs and create plans to execute their leadership visions. The Competing Values framework will be used to build leadership and interpersonal knowledge and skills and intrapersonal awareness.

Putting theory into action, students will work in teams to offer leadership in the local community through philanthropic activities in support of local, not-for-profit agencies or charitable organizations. Through the experience of the team project, students will learn about the problems and practices of leadership in a way that is not possible in a traditional classroom. These projects will directly benefit the local community.

Learning Objectives and Expected Outcomes:
To gain intrapersonal and interpersonal insights through the completion of a leadership development plan and executing this plan while producing change in our community;
To build and expand social networks and leadership competencies through active engagement with the community;
To learn about key aspects of personal and organizational leadership by examining theory, research and practice in areas such as personality and individual differences, team dynamics, communication, conflict resolution, motivation.
To acquire and practice the leadership skills necessary for personal and team effectiveness.
To practice and enhance oral and written communication skills.
