Jail and Prison

Prisons are places where convicted offenders serve times as punishment for breaking the law. Jails are short-term confinement facilities whose purpose is to hold those waiting for trial or sentencing.
There are a large variety of types of prisons and those are state prisons, federal prisons, rehabilitation prisons, jails, minimum security, medium security, and maximum security. Other types also consist of one or more high security prisons for long term high risk offenders, medium security institutions for offenders who are not high risk, institutions for adult woman, institutions for young adults ( under 25), specialized mental hospital-type security prison for the mentally ill, and open type institutions for low risk none violent inmates.
The major differences between selected jails and prisons are the length. Jails are for people that are charged with a crime and are not able to pay bond or bail, whereas prisons are for convicted criminals serving long sentences.
Whereas prisons are long term confinement facilities design to hold those who have been sentence to serve time for any crime committed. Jails operated at a local level that holds convicted offenders and unconvicted persons for short periods.
Prison subculture the values and behavioral patterns characteristics of prison inmates. Realities of prison life, inmates must look to the prison environment for all its needs. Discovering a new social world, which they must participate or face the consequences such as physical violence or death. The inmate needs to learn convicts values, attitudes, roles, and language for survival, as well for prison codes. These codes consist of not interfering with the interest of the inmates, never rat on a con, don’t exploit, steal or break your word, and to not trust guards or staff.
Positive cultures in jails and prisons have grounded an ethic of respectful behavior and interpersonal communication that benefits prisoners and staff. Official culture promoted by staff and by the administrative rules of the institution. Culture imposed by correctional officers to enforce the rules and regulations.
Community based corrections is a sentencing style that depends less on traditional confinement option and more correctional resources available to the community. It includes sentencing options such as probation, parole, home confinement, and electronic monitoring of offenders. Community based corrections purpose is to provide services outside jail or prisons by offering programs in which offenders are supervised. These Community based Programs also includes diversion, restitution, half way houses, and various provisions for temporary release from prison.
Jails play an important role in the criminal justice system because just like prisons it separates the criminals from the public, to make it safe. Jails operate community base programs with day reporting, home detention, provides job releases, placement, and other types of supervision. As well for housing inmates of federal, state, and other authorities because of overcrowding of their facilities
Violent behaviors that concerns jails and prisons, are riots or any type of disturbance. Any terrorist attacks undertaken by the inmates within a prison or jail, sexual assaults, suicides, inmates assaults on staff, inmates vs. inmates, and self inflicted violence.
The role of probation is an aspect of sentence serve while being under supervision in the community, being a court order sanction. Its goal is to retain control over criminal offenders while using community programs to rehabilitate them. Probation conditions are to obey all laws, maintain employment, remain within the jurisdiction of the court, posses no firearms, and allow probation officer to visit the home or work place as well to pay a fine to the court.
