Presidential Election 2012 Project I believe Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are both fit to be president of the United States. Obama was born in August 4th 1961 in Honolulu and had a difficult childhood full of prejudice. For example, when Obama was just two, his mother, Ann Dunham of Kansas divorced with Obama Sr. of Kenya(Obama’s father). Dunham then married another man, Lolo Soetero, who caused them to move to Indonesia, where Obama’s half-sister Maya Soetero Ng lived. Dunham who worried for Obama’s safety allowed him to move in with his grandparents in Hawaii. He excelled in school and was talented in basketball but was bullied by his classmates for being black. His genetic father once visited him, but ten years later had gotten into a tragic car accident that had ruined his career in politics. In 1982, Obama Sr. was involved in another car accident that costed him his life. Even if Obama had only seen his dad once or twice, he felt remorseful. Obama studied in Occidental College in Los Angeles for two years, and then transferred to Columbia University in New York, graduating in 1983 with a degree in political science. He then moved to Chicago in 1985 and had worked as a community organizer for low-income residents in the Roseland and the Altgeld Gardens communities. In 1988 Obama entered Harvard Law School, where he met his future wife Michelle Robinson. He graduated from Harvard in 1991. Obama then returned to Chicago, where he practiced as a civil rights lawyer and taught as a part time professor and lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992-2004. In October of 1992, he and Michelle got married and moved to Kenwood, on Chicago’s South Side where Malia and Sasha were brought to the world. In about three years, he published an autobiography called “Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance” that became so popular it was printed in ten languages. He ran to be the Illinois State Senate- and won as a democrat. During his years as a senate he worked with people and expanded health care services and helped the people of Chicago. In 2008 he ran to be the United States President and became president beating John McCain in a close battle to take the spot as president. Romney however had a different past, with diverse events that took place in it. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on March12, 1947. Romney is also the son of former Michigan Governor George Romney. Mitt Romney was raised in Bloomfield Hills, in Michigan, where he went to school in Brigham Young University in 1971. He attended Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School, and received a law and a Master Administration degree in the year 1975. In 1969, he married Ann Davies and had five sons- Tagg, Matt, Ben, Craig, and Josh. Mitt Romney and his family are very religious, unlike Obama. Being the son of George Romney (who lost to Richard Nixon), Mitt began his career as a business man. He worked for Bain & Company in 1984. In 1994, he ran for U.S Senate in Massachusetts, but was defeated by Ted Kennedy. In 1999, Romney was known to America, by becoming the president of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. He contributed to the rescue of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games from financial and ethical problems, and led the successful Salt Lake City Games in 2002. In 2003, he was elected as governor of Massachusetts because of his job well done in helping the 2002 Olympics happen. During his term, Romney oversaw the reduction of a 3 billion dollar deficit. He also signed into law health-care to provide health care to the residents of Massachusetts. Romney now runs for the 2012 campaign, hoping to become the next U.S president.
