A combined workshop for Home Visitors on the relationship with clients who are pregnant or new parents with a special emphasis on teen parents.
After participating in the workshop, home visitors should be able to: • Name and discuss some unique developmental tasks faced by a pregnant and parenting teen parent. • Plan at least two activities with a teen (young) father and his newborn that may contribute to a positive attachment between the two. • Identify the basic changes that occur in a normal pregnancy by “trimester.” • Discuss with a pregnant client her plan for the birth of her baby, including her “labor and delivery checklist.” • Demonstrate a “guided exploration” of the newborn (for either mother or father) that would be appropriate for a first postpartum visit. • Explain how the Home Visitor’s “reliance on the receptive posture” can be an important tool when “things don’t go as planned” in the pregnancy or birth.

This training addresses the following selected New Mexico Association for Infant Mental Health (NMAIMH) Competency Guidelines for Culturally Sensitive, Relationship-based Practice Promoting Infant Mental Health: • During observations and assessments, identifies emerging competencies of the infant and young child within a relationship context. • Supports and reinforces parent’s strengths, emerging parenting competencies, and positive parent-infant/young child interactions and relationships. • Supports and reinforces parent’s capacity to seek appropriate care during pregnancy. • Helps parent to: “See” the infant/young child as a person, as well as all the
