1. Introduction:
“We have many wants” Plato (1888)
Everybody wants to prosper in their life, no matter their social background, believes or education; and they all want to pursuit their personal success -from entrepreneur to the simple team worker. Many professionals agree that the key for the success is often hidden in the personal skills. Their importance is vital in terms of finding and developing the professional carrier. One way to realise in what someone is good in is by performing a skill analysis. Coetzee (2002) explains that a skills audit is an investigation which is undertaken to determine the actual skills of the current workforce in order to define the skills gaps and real skills requirements of the organization. In other words skill analysis identifies the strengths and weaknesses one has, which also helps them me to realise their future career choice- in my case a Hotel manager. To be successful in Hotel Management it needs more than just a good knowledge of the hotel industry. A good hotel manager knows how to delegate, but always keeps a close eye on every aspect of the business. He has to be a good communicator and to actively seek information about what is going on in the hotel, the industry, and in the wider society. Another important role of the manager is to seek guest satisfaction, and deal with the many problems that arise in this business.
Another way that influence and helps the carrier choice of an individual is through “Learning styles”. Schmeck (1988) observes that the need to develop certain skills, educational specialisation, and professional career is often influenced by learning styles. When viewed broadly, learning can be seen as the creative development of personal identity-Learning styles. Honey and Mumford's (1986) model- Learning Styles Questionnaire (LSQ) - is directly derived from Kolb's theory (1984). They found that Kolb's LSI had low face validity with managers, so for that reason each person should know their personal skills and learning styles, to be able to develop according their current job description and expand career.
2. An analysis of a chosen career opportunity
As previously mentioned in the introduction my career choice is a Hotel Manager. The hotel manager in general is responsible for the day-to-day management of a hotel and its staff.
2.1 Hotel Manager’s typical roles and responsibilities:
Prospects.as.uk (2012) explains in their website that the manager’s main roles are connected with commercial accountability for budgeting and financial management, planning, organizing and directing all hotel services, including front-of-house (reception, concierge and reservations), food and beverage operations, and housekeeping. In larger hotels, managers often have a specific remit (guest services, accounting and marketing) and make up a general management team. The mentioned website also states that while taking a strategic overview and planning ahead to maximize profits, the manager must also pay attention to the details, setting the example for staff to deliver a standard of service and presentation that meets guests'
