Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Post-traumatic stress disorder is a disorder that can occur after an even that would be considered traumatic to a person. A violent experience for example death or injury though war can lead to this disorder. People who have this disorder can be stressed even though they are not in the situation anymore. Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD for short is currently a growing concern these days. We have troops serving for our country, when they come back from war there are some of them that come back scared from terrible events that they witnessed. Post-traumatic stress disorder can affect not only soldiers in wars, but the disorder can affect people that survive natural disasters for example hurricanes, tornados and earth quakes. Also post-traumatic stress disorder can occur in people if they have been involved in a violent crime for example a shooting or a bombing. In some cases people may have something called survivor’s guilt in which the person feels guilty for living when others around them are dead. The symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder are grouped in to three separate categories. First is re-experiencing symptoms , avoidance symptoms, and Hyper arousal symptoms Recently in my English class we have been reading short stories from the author J.D Salinger. In both short stories the main character is affected by post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. In the short story a perfect day for bananafish it starts with a conversation between Muriel and her concerned mother. From the beginning of the story we find out that in the conversation Muriel as well as her mother know that there is something wrong with Seymour. Muriel’s mother is more concerned for Muriel’s husband Seymour. She kept asking questions about how he is doing and she is suggesting that he should see a doctor. Seymour served in the war in which was believed to be released from the hospital early which is the reason why Muriel’s mother believes that is why he is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. I believe that Muriel wanted to stay at the resort to distract her from what is actually happening in reality and that she doesn’t want to face the truth. On the beach Seymour finds Sybil and informs her that he really likes hers blue bathing suit, but she tells him that the bathing suit is actually yellow. It shows that there is something obviously wrong with him. He tells her about the banana fish and how it’s greedy because it keeps of eating, but it cannot get out because it stuck in the hole and it eventually dies.
