Can you imagine going to sleep without a roof over your head? The concrete street left as your bedroom? Imagine working 80 hours a week, if not more, just so you and your family can have enough food to last the rest of the week, and trying to afford the inflated rent of a run down apartment complex. This happens only when there are no other options to turn to. I have seen first hand of many people being homeless, and I want to help. No one should have to live that way. Some families just do not have the same opportunities as others but every family deserves the chance to afford a home that is clean and in good condition. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that brings the recourses and labor of many people together in order for a family to purchase a home with no down payment, and no interest inflated mortgage. By giving your time to habitat for humanity you will be able to help a family in need build a home that is clean, reasonably priced and one they can call their own. In order for you to realize this, I will first tell you about how habitat for humanity was developed, second what is happening in todays society, third why you should help and fourth how you can get involved.
First, I will tell you about how habitat for humanity began. The history of this organization can trace its roots as far as 1976 and was founded by Millard and Linda Fuller. According to achievement.org Millard was a wealthy man, but because of his drive for success, his marriage was not doing so well. He decided to donate most of his wealth to charities including a Christian community church. He moved close to the church on a farmland and got involved in the Christian community. As they were living there, Millard and Linda noticed the poor quality of their neighbor’s houses. They got a hold of the church and the local community of people willing to help, and got to work. Habitat for humanity is still going strong today. According to habitat.org 600 thousand homes have been built or repaired worldwide. Also, there are over 15-hundred habitat groups in the United States. This organization believes that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. Don’t worry; they are not just talking your money! Its gong to a good cause and it funds all of the supplies to build the houses. Business and individuals donate money and partner families’ take it from there. They purchase these houses through a non-profit, no-interest mortgage loans or through new financing methods.
Second I will inform you of what is going on in today’s society. Worldwide, 827.6 million people live in a filthy and overcrowded urban areas populated by very poor people. It threatens more lives then what you may think. The percentage of people without access to decent, stable housing is rising. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, an estimated 5.4 million American households face worst-case housing needs. Receiving little or no government housing assistance, these families are unable to find a decent place to live at a price they can afford to pay. According to www2.ljworld.com if we are to succeed in the fight against poverty, we must support the expansion of housing both as policy and as practice. Third, why you should help! You should help because all of you are good people and if that were someone you knew, you would help, even if it were something small. Also, you are doing a good deed and you can feel great about yourself! You are providing decent stable housing for people who are in need of it. You would be providing more than just a roof over someone’s head. It brings hope to many people, for example; it provides stability for families and children, as well as the sense of dignity and pride. According to Habitat.org, the transformational
