Political science approaches: 1) Institutional- is concerned with institututions. An institution in an established pattern of behavior and of relationships. That intern regulate other behaviors and address public problems 2) Policy- collects facts through document analysis, research, case studies, and does so to develop a set of solutions to an important and pressing problem. 3) behavioral -
Political behavior - behavior is a set of activites that requires various resources to perform. That expresses attitudes and that transmits interest and preferences about needs and wants to public officials.

Political behavior characteristics: 1) actual/vicarious- tv vs voting 2) concrete/symbolic- concrete produces tangable , substantive results. Symbolic is behavior that produces intangible results 3) individual/group – 4) systematic/random - 5) overt/covert - 6) involving/non-involving -
Political behavior types:
1) electoral - conventional upholds or supports elite power in the political system, examples are voting, discussing politics and attending a campaign or rally, working for a party or campaign.
2) communal - also called conventional, expresses support for elite control. They decide who the candidates will be. Decide what the issues will be.
3) protest - – a type of political behavior that is elite challenging. Challenging elite control of policy institutions and regimes. It is culturally or legally sanctiones or prohibited.
Resources: information, money, time – more likely to be politically active if you have these resources.

Power - is the ability to control the behavior of other actors
Authority - is the ability to issue commands that others must obey.
Legitimacy- is the ability of an actor that illicit voluntary compliance from others.
Political change types: reform, revolution
Democracy - a regime in which power is alternated, diffused, ( spread out) and constrained by constitutions, elections, and public opinion.
