Assumptions and Fallacies

An assumption is something that you assume is going to happen. It could be something very small that you might not even notice. You might assume that your husband or wife is going to pick up your children every day from school. Although it could be true it is an assumption. Also, you can assume what the weather is going to be for the day ahead of you. Not know the truth about the weather it is just an assumption. Assumptions can interfere with critical thinking because, when you assume something you might not know all of the facts. When one is critically thinking, you need to know all of the facts so that you can know every little detail. A way to avoid assuming something when you are critically thinking is to make sure you are getting all of the facts on the topics. Another way you can avoid assuming things is to, research the topic to help you get all of the facts, you can also take interviews if the topic concerns any other people.

A fallacy is a misconception or an error from incorrect reasoning. For example, there was a game I used to play when I was little called the telephone game. A group of children sit in a circle, and one child starts with a saying like, “When pigs fy, that will be the day.” He then whispers it to the child next to him, and then he repeats what he heard to the child next to him, until it reaches the end.
