Psalm 104 In verse 2 it says, “The Lord wraps Himself in light...” The target domain for this verse is the Lord, and the source domain is the light. The connection between the two domains is that the Lord is a light for all in the darkness. The emotional impact of this image is that regardless of how much darkness there is, it can never overcome light. But light can always over power darkness, just as God can overcome any darkness. This verse is a reminder that God is light.

Psalm 121 In verse 5 it says, “The Lord is your shade on your right hand.” The target domain is the Lord, and the source domain is the shade on your right hand. The connection between the two domains is that The Lord is our shade, always there, like a shadow. The right hand is like that place of a protector always ready to defend, as God is both our shadow and protector. The emotional impact of this image comes when you see how God is always there for us, like a shade or shadow, and always protecting us and defending for us.

Psalm 100 In verse 3 it says, “We are His people, the sheep of His pasture.” The target domain would be His people, and the source domain would be the sheep of His pasture. The connection between the two domains is shown through how humans are the Lords people, as sheep belong in the shepherd’s pasture. The emotional impact of that is shown through the fact that humans belong to someone and we are His. God cares for us as a shepherd cares for his sheep.

Psalm 80 In verse 1 it says, “Hear us, Shepherd of Israel, you who led Joseph like a flock.” The target domain is the shepherd who led Joseph, and the source domain is “like a flock.” The connection between the two domains is that God was leading Joseph and a shepherd would be leading his sheep. The emotional impact this may have is that God is always leading us because we are his sheep. He never lets us out of His sight. Even if we wander off, He is constantly watching over us.

Lament Psalm
How long, Oh Lord
Must I wait with unease?
For You to draw near
And hear all my pleas.
My soul longs to grow deeper
Into the soil of Your love.
I stand quiet by the water,
Yet still feel unworthy of.
How long, Oh Lord
Must I wait with unease?
I want to grow closer,
Strong and fruitful like the trees.
My heart desires for richer roots
And I know You are my answer
To getting these fruits.
How long, Oh Lord?

This text fits the pattern of a lament psalm through the way it starts with crying out to God, then moves to feeling rejected and distant from God, then back to crying out to Him and realizing the need for Him.

“My soul longs to grow deeper
Into the soil of your love.” The target domain is the soul longing to grow deeper, and the source domain is the soil of His love. The connection is found in the way the soul wants to grow deeper into Gods soil. The emotional sense of this text is shown through the way that God’s love is so deep, that we can never stop growing in Him. Though there may be times we feel dead and dry, Gods soil is full of the nutrients we need in order to come back to life and closer to Him.

“My heart desires for richer roots.” The target domain is the hearts desires, and
