Dreams by Langston Hughes is a great poem. It is very short but it also has meaning to it. It amazes me how this man can write a poem in less than 9 lines and still have the ferociousness as the greatest writers did back when they were alive. Dreams has different poetic devices used throughout the poem such as, imagery and metaphors. This is the poem.

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

The First kind of imagery that Langston Hughes uses in this great piece is metaphors. An example of a metaphor the he uses is. "For when dreams go life is a barren files frozen with snow. This is telling you that life without dreams is plane and not exciting as he compares it to a barren field that is frozen. Another metaphor that he uses in this poem is "For if dreams die life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly" This is saying that if you don't take care or cherish dreams/hold on to dreams than life doesn't work, like its handicapped or like its a broken winged bird that cannot fly. You cannot soar like a bird if you don't hold on to your dreams. Another Poetic device that Langston Hughes utilizes is imagery. Imagery is a very important thing in this poem by Langston Hughes and there are two examples of imagery in this poem.
