As photo manipulation grows in popularity with the media, so does the idea that photo editing is a necessity. Photo editing software is no longer used to fix a blip made by the camera, but instead made to fix “blips” of natural beauty. Photo editing is mainly used in the media to portray images of perfect human beings. The thought is ridiculous, yet every magazine continues to Photoshop the chit out of every photo. Now a days, what you see is not always what you get, photos lie. If anything, the industry practices of faking beauty should teach individuals an important lesson. No one is perfect, and now that we know that most celebrity photos are edited, we can feel better about ourselves. We can also look at the industry’s habits as strange and unnecessary. It is now our responsibility to decipher what is real and what is fake when it comes to images, and this fosters a healthy attitude of questioning what we are given at face value. We should know to research and decide for ourselves the truth, instead of just accepting what we are told. However, we should not go crazy trying to prove a false truth just because of our skeptical views on image editing, such as the little league mom in the Daily Herald article. I do not believe that we need mathematical formulas to decide how much is too much when it comes to editing. I think that the only editing needed or allowed should be editing that helps add to the effect of a photo, or simply fixes a problem created by the camera.
