The speculative employment of reason with respect to nature leads to the absolute necessity of some supreme cause of the world: the practical employment of reason with a view to freedom leads also to absolute necessity, but only of the laws of the actions of a rational being as such. Now it is an essential principle of reason, however employed, to push its knowledge to a consciousness of its necessity (without which it would not be rational knowledge). It is, however, an equally essential restriction of the same reason that it can neither discern the necessity of what is or what happens, nor of what ought to happen, unless a condition is supposed on which it is or happens or ought to happen. In this way, however, by the constant inquiry for the condition, the satisfaction of reason is only further and further postponed. Hence it unceasingly seeks the unconditionally necessary and finds itself forced to assume it, although without any means of making it comprehensible to itself, happy enough if only it can discover a conception which agrees with this assumption. It is therefore no fault in our deduction of the supreme principle of morality, but an objection that should be made to human reason in general, that it cannot enable us to conceive the absolute necessity of an unconditional practical law (such as the categorical imperative must be). It cannot be blamed for refusing to explain this necessity by a condition, that is to say, by means of some interest assumed as a basis,
the Christian era Western Philosophy began by advocating a method of enquiry based on the primacy of reason. Discuss the strengths of this approach. Reason is primacy over religion and faith. Reason would not have been introduced if the early Greek philosophers did not discover religion, however religion was soon rejected as the answer to the questions of life. There are a few points which lead to the conclusion of reason being more superior to religion. Firstly reason seeks to find the truth and…
Friday 27th March 2015 Type A essay (25 marks): For what reasons has evolutionary theory been considered to pose such a threat to religious belief? The nature of the relationship between religion and science as a whole can be seen as either complementary or contradictory depending on personal viewpoints. Many scientists and creationists see this relationship as complementary and as a ‘non over-lapping magistenia’ or as allied fields of inquiry. Whilst more extreme scientific atheists and fundamentalist…
between Faith and Reason Faith and Reason are intrinsically linked within the Catholic Church. The mutual link between “good” philosophy and revelation is of pivotal importance and is discussed at length in “Fides et Ratio”. Before delving too thoroughly into this subject, however an important distinction must be made about what constitutes “good” philosophy (in the context of this discussion). This is beautifully summed up in the phrase “orthós logos, recta ratio(right reason).” It is up to the…

Eastern and Western Philosophers Comparison Paper It is hard to compare Eastern and Western philosophy and philosophers because the standard way of life was so very different from each area due to climate and regional differences. It is also hard to pick one from each region to compare since both areas had dozens upon dozens of philosophers from every school of thought. Not all were worth ‘their salt’ as it were, but many were great thinkers with ideas and ideals that stretched beyond their…

Many people spend years going to school in attempt to master a profession, many others go about the motions trying to figure out their purpose in life. Whichever the…
