Immanuel Kant (1724 – 1804):
Immanuel Kant was a modern day German deontologist from Prussia and became one of history’s most famous Philosophers. A deontologist is someone who believes in acts that are strictly right or wrong. Kant was an influential thinker and one of the last philosophers of the Enlightenment era. However his work in epistemology (the study of knowledge) and theology (the study of religion) are still influential to current philosophers of our time. He was also known for his beliefs in ethics and his knowledge in astronomy.
Kant was an independent person, meaning he did not let others influence his way of thought. He created his own moral
People deserve respect; we are all human beings on this earth and deserve to be treated kindly. We are each free and able to make rational decisions as responsible human beings and are fully capable of acting morally. An example of this principle would be if you were shopping in the mall and you need to check out your purchases, you simply would go up to the retail clerk and she checks you out because that is her job, she is willing to assist you in this manner and you respect her for what she is doing. You are not using her as a means to get what you need, which would be a violation of this categorical imperative. (Evers) (Driver, 2006)
Last but not least, the third formulation states “therefore, every rational being must so act as if he were through his maxim always a legislating member in the universal kingdom of ends.” By this I think Kant meant for individuals to hold themselves high, be proud of who you are, as if you were a law-making member of some sort. Someone of such confidence would be able to harmonize a society or kingdom as Kant states, and establish laws that were abided by all, universal laws. (Evers)
Rationale:
After researching theorist I realized that I agreed more with Immanuel Kant’s theories overall. Kant believed in intuition, as do I. Some may call it a religious intuition, but whatever it was, he was onto something and became an inspiration to all philosophers. I believe intuition is something that comes from within a
