San Antonio Spurs are a sports organization that should be used as a model for all professional athletic teams. Their commitment to the game and the community is leaps and bounds above most other organizations. Today’s athletes are seen as role models, whether they want to be or not, and need to display morals and ethics for the youths that look up to them. I cannot think of a better group as a whole than the Spurs who are consistently model citizens. The upper management team for the Spurs makes this one of their priorities before considering acquisition of a player. The establishment considers not only the ability of a player, but how well they fit the structure of the organization. There are no attention-seeking glory hounds on this roster, and there is no room for them ( Fromal, Adam, 2014, p. 1). Silver & Black Give Back is a public charity that invests in the community in partnership with the entire Spurs Sports & Entertainment family of teams. For more than 25 years the players, coaches and staff have focused on fostering young talent and enriching the community by encouraging local youth to become responsible adults and give back through programs like Spurs Youth Basketball League and Team Up Challenge.
For 2014, the Silver and Black Give Back named five student-led groups as the Team Up Challenge Champions awarding each $20,000. The five Champions were selected based on presentations made to the Team Up Challenge review committee, online voting and overall commitment to making the community impact over the course of the academic year.
