Personal Responsibility Essay
Even though they are different, personal responsibility and college success go hand in hand because succeeding in college depends on whether or not you are a responsible person and a student’s college success involves your whole life style. Personal responsibility involves a person’s actions, behavior, and the consequences that follow. College performance is based on how responsible they are involving their finances, environment, and personal choices they make. Any person is able to place a plan into effect in order to practice personal responsibility within their college experience. This plan will help the student have success within their college experience. Personal responsibility can be a difficult concept to put into words. Personal responsibility is acknowledging your own actions. Every day individuals make choices. When choosing between paying an electric bill and buying a new video game, it is more responsible to pay that electric bill. A personally responsible individual must also have control over their behavior. This involves many characteristics, such as acting the appropriate age, handling anger, using manners, and so on. As a responsible individual they must acknowledge consequences for their actions. If a person does not pay that electric bill, they will not have power for light, TV, microwave, heat, and the list goes on. It is also in the way that they approach their surrounding circumstances, “in the words of Jim Rohn, "You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself."” Robinson, G. (2012, Feb 19). An individual’s success as a student in college is very much dependent on whether they are responsible as a person. If they consider how much their college experience affects their personal life, it is pretty extravagant. Choosing their environment for completing homework is a great example of how responsibility intertwines with college success. When deciding if they should study at the library or study at the bowling alley so they can knock down some pins in between a vocab word, it is probably better to use the library since it is quieter, easy to concentrate, and there are no distractions to take your mind off the material. This is a responsible decision that affects their college success. A student’s personal responsibility regarding financials also affects their college success. Everyone despises the relentless FAFSA that must be completed in order to get assistance in paying for college. Unfortunately, if this form isn’t completed, it would be impossible for some students to pay for their education. Hence, they would not be able to succeed with their education. Ensuring they do not put this form off until it is overdue, is the responsible thing to do and if not done, may cost them their education. Following a set plan for a student’s college experience is the best way to ensure they are being responsible and succeeding as much as possible. They should plan to use time management to ensure that they are spending their spare time wisely and completing assignments on time. As noted in Time management tips and time management strategies for achievers. (2011, Oct 28). "To master time is to master life." The ABC check list method is a great idea for any student. Placing all of their tasks into a list and prioritizing them as to what needs completed first, then doing it seems to be the best fit for any busy student who is adjusting to new
