The book I read for summer reading is The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. The reader learns on the first page that the book is set up as a letter to a friend (the reader). The writer of the letter is a boy named Charlie, who is a wallflower. A wallflower is someone that sits back and watches everyone and everything that is around him. It is clear that he is bullied because he would rather walk forty minutes home every day from school instead of taking the bus with the other students. The reader knows that Charlie has a mental illness, but we do not know what it is. The book allows the reader to look into the mind of a disturbed teen and watch how he handles the stresses of being a freshman in high school. I chose to read this book because I had heard great reviews about it from my friends. It is really relatable to what teens go through in high school. In the beginning, Charlie’s only friend is his teacher Bill, who challenges him by giving him extra credit reading assignments and someone to talk to. While attending a football game alone, Charlie sits next to Sam and Patrick who became his best friends. They introduce him to sex, drugs, and alcohol, which we all experience sometime in high school. Though he is now attending parties and has a set circle of friends, he still knows that something is wrong with him. He still cries a lot and has panic attacks when he is stressed out or something eventful happens. It is not until the end of the book
