1. As we have discussed, competency models describe the behaviors and skills managers need to exhibit if an organization is to be successful. Consider the general competencies found in Figure 7.3 and apply these to Andra Rush, providing examples of how these competencies apply.
“Competency models describe the behaviors and skills managers need to exhibit if an organization is to be successful” (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, p. 252). In many organizations, competency models can differ between the different hierarchies of managers. As a person’s leadership role evolves so do the behaviors and skills he or she must possess to be an effective leader. This statement holds firm as with the case of Andra Rush.
Throughout the case study, Although the case study does not give detailed information about the levels of management Rush went through, the leadership pipeline can still be implemented.
Working as nurse, Rush built relationships with team members by listening to their complaints. And, she provided high quality work by actively listening to patients. In the beginning formation of the trucking company, Rush started as an individual contributor. And, she eventually rose to the status of CEO where she sets company direction, creates company culture, and manages the entire company (p.257). Rush sets the company direction and culture by creating a diverse workforce and providing educational programs. And, she still manages to complete ride-alongs with drivers.
3. Andra Rush belongs to several volunteer organizations. Would her leadership style need to change as the president of the Native American Business Alliance versus the CEO of Rush Trucking? How would the Community Leadership Model apply to Andra Rush?
“Community leadership is the process of building volunteers to accomplish important community outcomes; and represents an alternative conceptualization of leadership behavior” (p.259). Serving as the president of the Native American Business Alliance versus the CEO of Rush Trucking requires different leadership styles. Community leaders do not hold any real power nor can they discipline followers who stray from organizational
