What is discrimination?
‘The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex’ (Google, n.d.). However, there are two different types of discrimination: Direct and Indirect discrimination.
Direct Discrimination
‘Direct discrimination happens when an employer treats an employee less favourably than someone else because of one of the above reasons. For example, it would be direct discrimination if a driving job was only open to male applicants’ (nidirect government services , 2014).
Indirect Discrimination
‘Indirect discrimination is when a working condition or rule disadvantages one group of people more than another. For example, saying that applicants for a job must be clean shaven puts members of some religious groups at a disadvantage’ (nidirect government services , 2014).

What Factors Contribute to discrimination?
Various factors may contribute to someone’s reason for discriminating against someone or something such as: the way they are brought up by the people or person they live with, the friends or age group they associate themselves with, their own individual beliefs and the environment they group up in like for example the part of the UK they live. Their upbringing could result in them discriminating people because for example, their parents may discriminate against people and as they grow up they copy what their parents do and then do it when they go out. Peer groups could result in you discriminating against people because you may be under what they called ‘peer group pressure’ the person may be forced to discriminate against people out of their own will and because they want to fit in with the people they do it. However, this may not always be the case they may just be doing what their peers are doing because they want to; this links to individual beliefs as well. People could just be discriminating against people because they want to and that’s just how they feel about people. Lastly, the environment one is brought up in or lives in could contribute to them discriminating against people; it could contribute because for example if there is only one race in a community when they go to another area and see other races they may start to treat them differently not because it’s on purpose but because they are not used to seeing other people of that race.
Regarding the scenario, David 17 year old is the one being discriminated against by a Sexual Health Specialist Nurse. In the scenario he is a teenager who is going through a lot regarding his sexuality as he states that he is a bi-sexual. He also finds out that he has HIV but isn’t in a serious relationship with anyone therefore he gets drunk often and wakes up too different faces each time; which implies that he is having sexual intercourse with these various people which resulted in why he caught the STD. At this point, David will be very naïve because he is still young so the fact that he is calling himself a bi-sexual may just be a phase because he of coursing is still growing up and still finding things out about himself. The fact that he just found out that he has caught HIV will not make the situation any better because now he will be very stressed out because at such a young age you would probably be thinking that your whole life is over and there’s no way out. With all of this happening to David at one time in the worst case he could end up committing suicide or possibly start to self-harm.
There are various forms of discrimination found in the scenario that was made by the second nurse David was with. One of them being Homophobia this can be found when the nurse says to him ‘I mean it’s not normal to have sex with, with, with, well other men!’ ‘Homophobia is the irrational hatred, intolerance, and fear of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people’ (Stonewall, n.d.).
