1. Describe, in brief, the histories of both of Amazon.com and Yahoo.com, and determine the core business of each. Amazon, Inc. is considered to be a pioneer in online retailing. This company is well-known for its Kindle, extremely fast shipping, and selling nearly anything and everything online. Amazon.com started as an online bookstore, but soon expanded, selling DVDs, CDs, MP3s, video games, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, toys, jewelry, and anything one could think of. Jeffrey Bezos is the founder and CEO of one of the largest online retailer, Amazon.com, Inc. This company was founded in “1994 and headquartered in Seattle, Washington” (Amazon, 2014). Amazon, Inc. mission statement is “to be Earth’s most customer-centric company, where customers can find and discover anything”(Amazon, 2014).
This company have many opportunities for example, “increase in online retail sales, growing emphasis on online displayadvertising, growing eBook and tablet sales, and growing demand for cloud computingservices” (Amazon.com, Inc. SWOT Analysis, 2014). Amazon, Inc.’s core business could be very difficult to imitate. Building and successfully managing an online database as big as Amazon could be very difficult if the resources necessary are not available. Yahoo, Inc. offers consumers a variety of products and services including search engine, email, Messenger, News, Sports, Music, and Finance to name a few. Yahoo, Inc. was founded in “1994” (Yahoo Inc., 2014). Yahoo, Inc. has changed the way people communicate with each other, share and create information around the world. This company has grown into a global brand that has drastically changed communication channels, information availability and purchasing procedures.Yahoo vision statement is to make the world's daily habits “more inspiring and entertaining” (Yahoo Inc., 2014).
This company have many opportunities and strength for example, “shift towards smart devices to drive growth, display advertisement and mobile ad spend will be strong drivers, robust growth in user base, strong inorganic growth strategy to increased mobile presence, and debt free balance sheet” (Amazon.com, Inc. SWOT Analysis, 2014). As well as Amazon, Inc., Yahoo, Inc.’s core business could be very difficult to imitate. Amazon and Yahoo are e-commerce websites that could help businesses sell its products. Amazon selling experience consist of offering the products directly from its’ website and allowing businesses to ship products to customers from Amazon warehouses located around the country. Yahoo, Inc. offers Web hosting and Web designing tools to assist businesses build an online presence. In addition, it includes a search engine optimization tools. The key to Amazon.com’s success ishow the Internet does not impose any limits on how much Amazon can sell as well as loyal customers. It is known that Amazon.com has expanded over the years.Amazon has expanded to more than justselling books, music, and movies. As the company expanded, it added several products ranging from electronics, health and beauty products, housewares, kitchenware, tools, toys, and services as such. Loyal customers re essential to any business. Eve thought, is always good to recruit new customers is less expensive to just maintain current ones. Amazon’s customers’ loyalty comes from its ethical business practices. “Running businesses honestly, fairly, and transparently” (Baskin, 2013).
