The Negro Education
Introduction:
Thesis: Although they both agreed on the progression of black communities and the Negro education; they strongly disagreed on the type of education blacks should receive, strategies to achieve economic prosperity, and the black’s social standing in society.
Body Paragraphs:
I. Both Booker T. Washington and W.E.B Dubois advocated for the advancement of education in the black communities but they had different theories.
A. He believed blacks should get an industrial education based on their living conditions and economic needs.
1. Washington preached a philosophy of self-help, racial solidarity and accommodation.
2. Washington’s theory of education developed as a result of the path he took in acquiring an education.
B. W.E.B Dubois focused on a more liberal; intellectual based style of education.
1. DuBois believed in what he called the "the talented tenth" of the black population who would rise up to lead the black masses.
2. He said Washington’s theories would serve only to perpetuate white oppression
II. There’s no doubt blacks had a hard time achieving economic security during the period of these two leaders but with their help the mass managed to accomplish some type of job security.
A. Washington thought blacks should to start from the bottom and work their way up in society.
1. through industrial education blacks would not only be able to work for themselves but also know how to properly perform the tasks needed.
2. By utilizing this method they would always have jobs based on their location.
