Based on John Steinbeck's 1937 classic tale of two travelling companions, George and Lennie, who wander the country during the Depression, dreaming of a better life for themselves. On their way to succeed they meet some implausible people and some atrocious people like, Slim, Candy, Crooks, Curly, Curly’s wife etc. Then, just as heaven is within their grasp, it is inevitably yanked away. The film follows Steinbeck's novel closely, exploring questions of strength, weakness, usefulness, reality and utopia. The movie is not perfect because there are some parts that are directed very differently from the novel but it is still well directed. In the beginning of the film it opens with George and Lennie on the run, being chased by a group of men armed with rifles and led by hunting dogs. The viewer is led to believe that George and Lennie are bad and have committed a crime, which we know is not true, the incident in Weed was a misunderstanding. Secondly Lennie Small was portrayed very differently. His role of being innocent and mentally challenged was portrayed very well. His portrayal made me feel kind for the people that struggle in life. Lastly, the film-maker did a really good job of transforming Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men into a movie. The right mixture of action and humor is in the film and the mood of the novel is captured very well but it was missing some key moments , moods, and themes. The ending was also changed: in the book, George remains on the ranch, while in the film, George is seen riding alone in yet another boxcar to his next destination in both the introduction and the ending, indicating that George fled after killing Lennie, and is reminiscing on past events during the ride. At the end of the novel Slim, Curley and Carlson come to find Lennie dead and George with the gun in his hand. George lies and tells the men that Lennie took Carlson's gun and he tells them that he took the gun away from Lennie and shot him in the back of his neck. The book ends with Slim saying "You hadda George. I swear you hadda." and the two walking away.
