Of Mice and Men

"Ain’t many guys travel around together," he mused. "I don’t know why. Maybe ever’body in the whole damn world is scared of each other." (38). Of Mice and Men is a genius book written by John Steinbeck. The book itself has many themes. This paper is going to focus on loneliness. Steinbeck does a good job showing loneliness among people.
The character Crooks, the stable buck, is lonely. He was black. Because he is black, he doesn’t get to hang out with the other guys on the ranch. He doesn’t get to play cards or go out with them on the weekends. "You got no right to come in my room. This here’s my room. Nobody got any right in here but me."(75). Crooks is so lonely that when Lennie walks into his room, he tells him he doesn’t have the right to be there. He says this because he is used to his loneliness that he feels threatened when somebody tries to accompany him.
Curley’s wife is also lonely. Curly wants her to stay in the house and stay away from all of the men on the ranch. All she wants is someone to talk to because she gets lonely. The men try to stay away from her because they all think she is trouble. George is not lonely throughout the story although he ends up becoming lonely in the end. He is not lonely throughout the story because he has the companionship of Lennie. All the other men just have themselves. What makes George and Lennie different is that they have each other.
