Throughout the play, Oedipus has to deal with the consequences he set in motion, which allows a theme to form; people have to deal with their consequences at one point in their lives and because of this the truth always has a way of coming out. Oedipus from the beginning declares he will find the murder of Laius which allows irony to form. As a result of this, Oedipus is determined to go down a path which will lead to his own downfall. When Oedipus sends for Tiresias, he is doing this to gain the information he is determine to achieve. In the beginning, Tiresias does not allow this information to be revealed but because Oedipus provokes him by accusing him of the murder, Tiresias states “You are yourself the murder that you seek.” Because Oedipus accused Tiresias and annoyed him, Tiresias told him the truth. One could argue, Oedipus learned the truth not because of Tiresias but because of his own actions. Later in the play, Oedipus is so determined to figure out the murder he sends for a messenger and a herdsman. Again they tell him the information because he demands it. Oedipus then learns the truth; he’s the murder of his father and the husband to his mother. This play could relate to a modern audience due to the fact of its theme. Oedipus
