Assess mental status; Do not break, crush, or chew ext rel; Take with full glass of water; Take ½ - 1 hr before bedtime (PO), or right before retiring (ext rel); Avoid use with CNS depressants; Evaluate ability to sleep at night, decreased amount of early morning awakening if taking the product for insomnia; Dependence can occur with long term use

Cefazolin is excreted into human milk in small amounts. Cefazolin is considered compatible with breast-feeding by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Adverse Effects for Baby:
A positive direct and indirect antiglobulin (Coombs) test may occur in neonates of mothers who received cephalosporins before delivery.
Nursing Intervention:
Assess for signs of nephrotoxicity; I&O daily, Assess electrolytes; Assess bowel pattern daily; Watch for anaphylaxis and signs of overgrowth of infection; Evaluate decreased symptoms of infection, negative C&S. Have patient use yogurt or buttermilk to maintain intestinal flora, decrease diarrhea.
