Effective communication is very important in building a positive relationship with anyone, it helps people understand what they want and expect from each other. This helps to build strong personal and professional relationships between them. Effective communication is central to working with children, young people and adults. It helps build trust, and encourages them to seek advice.It also helps to establish and maintain relationships, to understand the stage of development, personal circumstances, and the needs of the person we are talking to.
Effective communication involves listening, questioning, understanding and responding to what is being communicated by the other person. It is important listening with the intention of really understanding what the other person means and how the other person feels. We are much more likely to build good relationships with children and young people if we really make an effort to see things from their point of view. If we do this, they will feel supported and understood, and are much more likely to open up and tell us about what is happening in their lives and how they feel.

We should be considerate and take the time to understand that sometimes children and adults have other concerns and issues out of school that are occurring in their life. This could lead to them behaving or reacting out of character or in an unexpected way.
Another principle to develop a positive relationship with someone is that we must show them respect.
We should be mindful that adults and children may be from different backgrounds or cultures to our own which may mean they have a different perspective on issues, values and beliefs.
We must always acknowledge these views and respect them even if we don’t agree as everyone is entitled to their opinion.
We should also actively listen to their opinions and points of view by giving them our full attention.
By doing so we will allow them to feel involved and valued.

There are several ways in which social, professional and cultural contexts may affect our relationships and the way we communicate.
There are some behaviour that may be perceived differently by people for example the way a person dresses may be accepted by one culture but not by another therefore offending them.
We should remember that different cultures will have their own norms of behaviour which may extend to gestures, body language and eye contact.
Some actions could be misinterpreted and cause offence leading to the breakdown of a relationship.
When communicating with others we need to consider the way in which we are working, sometimes we need to adapt the way we communicate in different situations, for example the way we behave in a meeting would be a more formal way of communication and different to the way we are when working normally. Similarly the manner in which we communicate socially is also likely to be different from a professional setting. If we are socialising out of school, in the pub or at a party we would be very informal.
