UNIT 1
1.1- Identify the different reasons why people communicate
People communicate for lots of different reasons such as making and developing relationships, expressing feelings, wishes, needs and preferences, giving and receiving support, expressing and obtaining information. Communication is important skill in carers role. We are communicating with service users to give them options they can choose from and to receive an information about their needs, wishes and preferences to make sure they are met. We are communicating with visitors to share some information’s that we know like for example where the toilet or room they are looking for is. We are communicating with our colleagues on every day basis to express thoughts and ideas about individual’s health, wellbeing and preferences we know about to ensure each other safety and to provide good service for residents. We are communicating with other organizations workers like for example ambulance service to provide them with essential information’s about particular resident that they need to make a correct diagnose which may be key while saving resident life.It is natural that people are communicating with each other because they want to build relationships with other people around them, to ask questions, to express their feelings about them, to socialize. As they communicate with us - their carers, we can meet their needs. It is important to communicate with others so we can share our ideas, share our experiences and knowledge to become more effective and make less mistakes.
1.2 - Explain how effective communication affects all aspects of the learner’s work
Effective communication is especially important when you are working as a team, you need to make effective relationship with your colleagues and with residents in your Care Home. Health and social care users and their relatives need to be able to trust and have a confidence in abilities of carer to support and take a good care for them. They need to be confident that they are valued as a person and that a carer is able to communicate with them about their particular needs, wishes and preferences relating to care. Effective communication is helping to build trust that is essential in this occupation. Effective communication prevents misunderstandings while you are dealing with your service users and is helping to understand individual’s needs. When you communicate effectively you are developing your own knowledge and skills. Effective communication with colleagues is an essential part of my work role in team-working environment. Effective communication with work colleagues is based on establishing on friendly but professional relationship where you are giving and receiving support on a way to reach shared goal of promoting health and wellbeing of people that we care for and support.
1.3 - Explain why it is important to observe an individual’s reactions when communicating with them
It is important to observe individual's reactions when communicating with them in one-to-one and in group situations to communicate effectively and to make a proper respond. Communication is a two-way process, to be an effective communicator you need to notice how other people respond to your communication. There are verbal and non-verbal ways to respond and to express emotional state that you can understand only by observing and noticing reactions of your residents, colleagues, visitors and others you are dealing with. You need to be aware of their attitude, you can hear when someone’s voice is raised or low, when he/she is muttering or when he/she stays silence. You will recognize when your client is happy, sad, excited or upset by looking at their facial expressions, body language, gestures. Observing reactions will help you recognize if information you are passing has been understood or if you need to change or adjust the way you communicate or if you used appropriate language and how the person is feeling about what you said to
