Management styles are characteristic ways of making decisions and relating to subordinates. This idea was further developed by Robert Tannenbaum and Warren H. Schmidt (1958, 1973), who argued that the style of leadership is dependent upon the prevailing circumstance; therefore leaders should exercise a range of management styles and should deploy them as appropriate.

Management skills can be learned and developed. Management skills involve the importance of reflecting and adapting your practice. Sometimes the most difficult person to manage may be yourself. Ruth House along with other homes have a supervision policy so that all staff are clear about the purpose and practice of supervision:

* Statement of intent * Contract, recording and confidentiality * Supervision contract * Accountability * Concerns and complaints * Endorsement of activities that the person has been actively involved in.

Supervision should be a two way discussion around the following areas: * Discussion of work activities and priorities * Reviewing performance on tasks, both positive aspects and areas to develop/improve * Setting new targets and discussing expectations * Support with any concerns regarding service users/staff * Reflection on experience of the work, any emotional responses that need reflecting on. Appraisals take place once a year in accordance with the SCC policy and procedure.
