“Novus Ordo Seclorum”
Nelson Mandela, a famous motivational speaker, once said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language that goes to his heart.” With a multitude of languages and dialects spoken in the globe today, many people think that a common language is necessary to facilitate communication between each other. But by speaking to someone in his native language, this shows respect, love, and make him to be feel important. Even if a worldwide language have advantage, but it also have disadvantage which might cause a downfall to the society.
Although the world is characterized by its linguistic diversity, setting up a new common language that can be spoken by everyone might be a terrific idea. Moreover, it can bring peace among nations and promote economic development. A common language might also provide individuals more opportunities to work wherever they wish. Equality among people by eliminating the spirit of superiority of one specific language in a country, also is a positive side of one world language. Although a common language may bring unified nations, we have to remember that not all countries will let themselves become part of this new unique country. The only way to solve this problem might be by going to war, which can cause the loss of many lives, and the war will result to imperialism. The most important loss that the world may face will be the loss of culture and languages in the smaller countries of our world. In this case, people may be forced to incline to orders or they may be considered to be against to the development of the society and possibly prosecuted if they don’t obey those orders. Already, Imperialism has demolished many cultures and languages around the world. For example, many African traditions and languages have disappeared over the years because colonial powers brought their own languages and cultures forcing the “uncivilized people” to assimilate. Thus, even though a one world language can seem beneficial, its disadvantages seem dangerous. I disagree with the idea of creating a common language because the world needs to be diverse so that there can be something to discover and talk about. When one talks about language, culture is also included; if a global language is installed many cultures will disappear and people may begin to forget their origin. An example of this is the present African continent and the African American community in the United States of America. Furthermore, the human race is meant to be diverse, and that’s what makes this world unique and multicultural despite its ups and downs. The society has already assimilated to this rhythm of differentiation, and the idea of a new language would not bring a solution to present day issues.
