The Hunger Games By: Suzanne Collins Kristina Humphries

In Panem, there are 12 districts, previously, there were 13, but because of the start of a revolt against The Capitol, the 13th district was eliminated: because of this attempted revolt, The Capitol holds the annual Hunger Games. The book takes place during the 74th Games. The Hunger Games are a fight to death, in which each of the 12 districts sends in two tributes, one male and one female. Being entered into the Games means if you don't make it out alive (and only one person does) then you're live is over, literally. The Hunger Games takes place sometime in the future (seeing as there are gadgets that do not exist yet).In the beginning, the book takes place in District 12. District 12 is where coal is mined, and therefore, it is described as having a layer of soot and coal dust over most things. Then, it goes to the capitol, which is a far different setting from District 12. People who live in the capitol are very wealthy, they dress, eat, and do way different then what the tributes are used to. Most of the story takes place in the arena, where the games are happening. Katniss Everdeen is a 16 year-old girl from District 12. She is very independent, strong, intelligent, and good with a bow an arrow. She isn't very good with letting out her feelings to others. Katniss cares deeply for her younger sister, Prim, therefore when Prim is choosen as tribute for the games, Katniss takes her place. The male tribute that was choosen from District 12, is Mr. Peeta Mellark. He is the baker's soon, and in the same year as Katniss. He is more in touch with his feelings then Katniss is, but he's not as strong or skillfull as she is; he is very intelligent though, which helps him greatly in the games. I'm going to introduce you to a few more of the many characters in the Hunger Games. Gale Hawthorn is Katniss Everdeen's best friend. Katniss describes him as “the only person with whom I can be myself."He is very similar to Katniss, but he seems to be slightly more in touch with his feelings. Two of the well recognized tributes were: District 2 male tribute and the leader of the Career pack, Cato, and the little girl that reminded Katniss of her own sister, and whom she formed an alliance with until her death, Rue. With the games not too far away, the tributes get all dolled up, and go on a talk show. They do this to try and get sponsors, which will send them food, tools, etc., which they will need to survive. During Peeta's interview, he reveals his longtime love for Katniss. Her, thinking that this is just to gain sponsors, is furious. Nearly half of the tributes die in the first day of the 74th Hunger Games! Katniss is shocked to see that Peeta has formed an alliance with the Careers (tributes from the wealthier districts), she then decides that she cannot trust him at all. While in the arena, Katniss constantly has to battle hunger, dehydration, the other tributes, and the Gamemakers, who are able to send violent fires and explosions through the woods. Katniss eventually forms an alliance with Rue, from District 11. When Katniss finds Rue dying, she sings to her until she's dead and then decorates her
