Chapter One:

The Party changes and rewrites the past. Winston is among the group of people that change and rewrite the past.
A memory hole was a slit (placed in short intervals) throughout the building, used for discarding newspaper.
Syme is a “friend” of Winston. Syme enjoys his job as a writer for the Newspeak dictionary.
Winston thinks that Syme will be vaporized eventually because he is too intelligent.
The Junior Anti-Sex League is advocated complete celibacy for both sexes.
Winston believes that hope for the future lies in the proles because that is the only place that could have the force to destroy the Party.
Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford were among the last survivors.

The “girl with the dark hair” is Julia. Winston is bothered by her because she thinks that she is a spy and that she is following him.
