IT PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION FAILURES
In the retail business or the health care world there will be a time when a system implementation will take place. System implementation is an important process that is needed in order for the information technology project to be a success. When a health care organization has decided on a system and the project team members has followed the stages for a go-live date then it is time to do a system implementation process (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2009, p. 168).
The first step of the order is to get an implementation team line up at the beginning of the system implementation process. The implementation team has a big responsibility such as planning, coordinating, organizing, and managing the new system implementation (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2009, p. 169). Even though, the implementation team is setup, it is important to have a system champion as the key person of the implementation team. A system champion duties are to be a listener, organizer, communicator, and a good leader (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2009, p. 169). The system champion will be a knowledgeable individual which will have input of the new system. The system champion will be assisting in the testing, training, building and coaching others on the new system (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2009, p. 170).
The second step of the order is to determine the project scope and the implementation team expectations. The implementation team has to determine the project scope and the expectations in order to know what the team hopes to accomplish and to discuss what the overall goals will be for the system implementation (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2009, p. 170). The last fundamental activity the implementation team will work on is to establish and institute a project plan for a new system. The implementation team will take steps to improve the project plan by handling tasks, the length of the each task, one task must be completed before starting another task, a team member is allocated a time to a task, responsibility for completing the task on time, completion dates, determine ways to evaluate the finished project, and the project success (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2009, p. 171).
CASE STUDY FAILURE
The case study of Memorial Health System, this health care organization did not follow the system implementation process; if the health care organization would have followed the system implementation process then it would not have so many problems trying to implement the CPOE. What I have gotten out of the case study is that these individuals were rushing to get things completed. Implementation process is a long process that no one can speed thru the steps and expect it to be successful once it is completed. Dryer and Roberts were very pushy to get information from the clinical and information technology team. When individuals are pushing to get a project completed, it is a guarantee something will be forgotten in this case study which was the workflow and system integration. This case study was a failure it did not follow the steps and it was missing the following fundamental activities such as the individuals were unclear of the project scope and
