Neonatal Cord Blood Stem Cells: Haematopoietic Stem Cells

Before being proven beneficial to saving lives, cord blood was discarded as waste material, now being used as a source of helpful stem cells. Since 1989, these stem cells have been used to treat children with blood diseases and is progressing to become beneficial to adults too. The, rare, stem cells found in the bone marrow can be found in the umbilical cord blood too. These stems cells can be collected without any harm or risk to the life of the baby or mother. Haematopoietic stem cells are capable or producing every type of cell that if found in the blood and is also responsible for the maintenance of blood production throughout our lives. These stems cells have been used in bone marrow transplants to treat blood diseases, too. Some say that cord blood contains nerve cells, but that is highly controversial and widely unaccepted. The use of these blood stem cells help s children with cancerous blood disorders, or genetic blood diseases. Once the patient receives that cord blood, the stem cells begin to make new and healthy blood cells to replace the damaged cells, whether they’re damaged by disease or by treatment for disease. Cord blood stem cells also replace the entire bone marrow transport procedure, being more convenient and less likely to cause further bodily complications.
