Vince Lombardi once said, "Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work." The last thousands of years have been about that individual commitment by each member of their respective societies to make a civilization what it is. The trials and tribulations of early civilizations had to be endured in order to establish what we consider a civilization today. Adversity was faced but these societies prevailed and created history. Hierarchy, communication, religion, advancement, stability, as well as utilization and location of resources are all things that needed to be figured out along the way. Each one brought many challenges to the table but civilization would not be what it is today if they had not paved the way.

People are different. In any society or social cohesion, whether they have the same religion, live in the same area or live under the same law, people are going to be different. Having a sense of hierarchy is a way to keep such diversity from being chaos. If you look to the Sumerian culture back in 2700 B.C.E, hierarchy plays a key role in the way that the Sumerians lived their lives. In each city-state they had their own king, and above him was a god. The king served as the liaison between the people and their god. Having this scale of social status allowed everyone to know their place in the community as to not to confuse the order of superiority.

We often look at communication as a conversation between two people at a given time, look a little further and we can see that communication can be accomplished in many ways as well as throughout many centuries. Writing, speaking, hand gestures are all types of communication. Egyptians used hieroglyphics as their way of writing and as a way of communication for many different reasons. Hieroglyphics literally means "language of the gods." Priests used hieroglyphics as a way of writing down prayers and magical texts, they also wrote down the way to the after life in peoples coffins and on tomb walls. The Egyptians also used hieroglyphics as a way to record calculations such as, the depth of the nile river or for historical events. This way of communication was not only a good way of exchanging information between each other, but it was also beneficial tool for us, in present day. Between the preservation of the hieroglyphics and the translation of the Rosetta Stone from the European scholars in the 1800's, we are able to have a better understanding of the way the Egyptians lived in 3000 B.C.E.

Much of who we are as a people come from our rituals and religion. It makes up what our everyday lives consist of. Today it is easy to see and understand where much of our religion comes from by just looking down the street at churches and synagogs or looking at paintings of Jesus or Buddha in peoples homes. During the old stone age paintings showed religion as well, these paintings were found deep within cave walls. They consisted of animals moving gracefully and seemed to be very naturalistic. This art is believed to be the window to their rituals and religion showing they believed that nature held all the power. Before a hunt rituals were held in caves in hopes of gaining control over the animals they were hunting. Painting an animal with a spear in it, would hopefully solidify a kill.

We see advancement everyday. Medically, technologically, and even personally. Continuous advancement is curtail in order for evolution not to come to a screeching halt. A good example of this would be about 3000 B.C.E in Mesopotamia. Also known as, the Bronze Age. Up until this time tools were made of stone, ivory and bone. Mining for copper
