We Were Once Friends A few weeks before summer break, I was at home studying for exams when two guys walk into my house completely naked. I knew both of their faces right when I saw them. They stood in the doorway laughing and drinking beer, clearly they were drunk. My mom knew exactly who they were too, Max Sorenson and Justin Sehmer. Two people who have no parental supervision along with some pretty intense anger issues. My mom called the police because she and my dad had both asked them to leave and they did not move from our house. The cops showed up a few minutes later arresting both of them and leaving them with breaking and entering tickets along with underage drinking tickets. About a week later I was just getting home around 3:30 AM on a Wednesday morning. I knew school the next day was going to be hell. I had been at Elmbrook Hospital since dinner time the night before. My grandma, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, had fallen and hit her head so to me it was worth missing out on some sleep to spend time with her. Once we got home it took me a little while to adjust into bed and I finally fell asleep around 4AM to the sound of the birds chirping our my bedroom window. On most days I would wake up about fifteen minutes before leaving for school around 7:45 since I only lived about two minutes away. Barely having slept, I get woken up to the sound of my mom screaming, “are you fucking kidding me? I don’t need this happening right now with everything going on with my mom!”. Instantly I jumped out of bed to see what was going on. I walk into my living room to find my mom on the phone and my dad facing our big picture window looking outside with his arms crossed with something that was black and leather in his hands. It was a wallet. With the lack of sleep it took me a second, but then I realized the double-pane window was shattered. Instantly my stomach dropped, my head filled with so many thoughts. “What happened to the window? Who is mom talking to?” I immediately asked. “She’s on the phone with the police. As you can see someone broke our window. I have a pretty good idea who did it,” he told me as he held up the wallet that was in his hand. “Who did it?” “Max Sorenson,” my dad replied. Max is known as a trouble maker, all of the police in Destin know exactly who he is. He has an uncountable number of tickets for various things, along with the fact that he is in the top three most wanted people in Brookfield. My mom had finally got off the phone. She looked at me right away, tears rolling down her face. “This is ridiculous. How can someone be so mean? This window will be at least $1,000 to replace. You’re going to have to talk to the police when they get here,” she said in her softest voice. I didn’t even know how to respond because she just looked so sad. Shortly after, the police had arrived. I had known this Officer from being at my High School’s sporting events. His name was Officer Batheia. He was 6’7” with black hair. He was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met and he knew me from the school events. “So, what is going on here?” Officer Batheia asked me. “Well I actually am not exactly sure, I just woke up. But from what I was told apparently Max Sorenson broke our window with this brick,” I told him as I pointed to the brick lying on the grass about a foot from the shattered window. “Do you have any idea why he would do that?” “Well I’m assuming he did it because he just got two tickets at our house about a week ago. Also my dad has his wallet which gives more reason to why he would’ve been the one who did it,” I explained. “Okay, so what is the deal between you two? Why you? Why your house?” “We were once friends, actually best friends. About three years ago we were really good friends. But then he moved away for about two years. When he moved back we hung out a few times but he definitely changed. He had a violent side, not towards me but he had a
