My Story to Canada
My great grandfather, Anton (Tony) Huber, was born in Oedsbach, Germany (in the Black Forest) and came to Canada in June 1929. He first worked in Hardy, Saskatchewan on a farm and later that same year settled in the Coaldale area. Frances Sehlinger joined him and they were married May 1st, 1930. He worked as a laborer until 1932 when he rented land from the C.P.R and Hudson's Bay Company, north of Coaldale on the property now owned by the Lengyels.

In April, 1934 my great grandparents moved into Coaldale and bought sixteen lots (the block west of Baker School) for $480. Frances and Anton farmed this land and at the same time rented various parcels of land around the Coaldale area, growing sugar beets, corn, beans and carrot. During this time Anton worked part-time for the Village of Coaldale and did various other odd jobs; wages earned during this period (1934-1935) were one dollar a day. He also seeded many sugar beets for other growers.

In the 1940s Frances and Anton purchased twenty acres of land south of the town, east and west of what is now St. Joseph School. They farmed this land until it was incorporated into the Town of Coaldale and subdivided into lots. The first of these lots sold for $100. In 1957 he purchased a farm, one mile west and one mile north of Coaldale, which he sold in 1970 when he retired.
My great grandpa was on the public school board for a number of years and was instrumental in establishing a separate school in Coaldale. He
