Situational Analysis
The Cliff View Hotel was a small hotel which has an excellent service among its guest and has a well patronized restaurant. However, the business internally was lacking discipline from employees towards middle management. According to Mr. Stuart who is the Manager the problem is not due to lack of training but the staff are given the opportunity to move swiftly up the ranks. Mr. Stuart thinks that “One takes time to go from Grade I to Grade IV of the Civil service”.

Problems
As we study the case study we realize two main problems leadership and management skills. How can one manage if they don’t have the skills to lead?
Leadership
We analyzed the leadership of Cliff View Hotel management under the Trait Theory. This theory composes of a High Energy Level, Knowledge of the job, Intelligence and perseverance. Trait theory states that leaders are born not made.
On reviewing the case study using the Trait Theory:
Was Mr. Stuart a good leader?
Did he have the intelligence to plan and organize the best management team needed?
No, as he didn’t recognize nor have the ability to strengthen his management team.
Was his decision in Ruby’s placement as an administrative supervisor a wise one?
His knowledge of the job lack as he did not fully think about the consequences which would be caused. Would you consider Mr. Stuart a good leader through the decisions he made.
Management
After reviewing Mr. David Stuart as a leader we recognized his poor leadership affected his management skills also; so we analyzed his management of the organization, some of the decisions made and the organization’s environment using some of the principles of organization by Henri Fayol and the management process (the POLC).
Management Task
Planning
A manager implements company goals and the actions the company must take to meet them.
Initiative
He had the initiative vision of where he wanted the company to go and yes, he did know the solution to his problem and the plan to achieve it. But, he lacked efficiency and effectiveness to apply these processes in the organization and into his planning.
Organizing & Staffing
A manager groups related activities together and assign employees to perform them.

Centralization
Even though management decisions were made from the top, employees of Cliff View Hotel enforced these rules to suit their selves and didn’t necessary comply with the middle management. Line of authority
There was no formal chain of command. Since middle management was weak this broke down the line of authority because there was no set standard for employees to follow. Unity of direction
Due to the success of the hotel we know that everyone knew their duties and how to execute them to suit their self, but as no one are together in achieving one goal this can cause many miscommunications when trying to achieve these goals.
Specialization of labor
Employees where trained for higher positions, but didn’t have the leadership skills to fully perform the managerial duty.
Espirt de corps
The organization lacked unity; they did not support each other. Mr. Stuart failed to communicate with employees as he lacked the human relations skill to bring unity.
Equity
We ask the question, “Was Ruby ready for a managerial position?”Ruby had been moved from being a receptionist to Administrative Supervisor which she had no training. She would have authority over all department supervisors which had the training and experience to be qualified for the job. Leading & Controlling
A manager provides the guidance employees need to perform their task. This ensures that the organization goals are met. A manager leads by keeping the lines of communication open.
