Transitions
Each age of a child has its own challenges. Many of these revolve around transitions, such as when your baby weans from the breast to bottle or from a crib to a bed and so on. Some of the common transitions children experience between the ages from 0-19 is:
3months – Moving your baby ta a crib from a bassinet
3-15 months _ Getting a first baby tooth
4-5 months _ Sleeping through the night
4-6 months _ Starting baby food
12 months _ Weaning from infant formula to whole milk
12-15 months _ Changing from a bottle to a beaker
12-18 months _ Moving from 2 naps (morning and afternoon) to 1 afternoon nap _ Weaning the infant or toddler from breast to infant formula depending On the age of the child
2 years _ Temper tantrums and the terrible twos
18mnth-3 year’s _ starting potty training
2-3 years _ Moving your child to a toddler bed
3 years _ Finishing potty training
3-5 years _ Giving up afternoon naps _ First day of school
4-5 years _ Staying dry at night this could be even later for some children or sooner.
6-7 years _ Losing a first baby tooth
8-13 years _ Starting puberty for girls
9-14 years _ Starting puberty for boys
15-19 years _ Learning to drive, graduating from high school, Moving out of home, going to college and getting a job.
There are no hard rules when dealing with transition, except that you should be suspicious that something would be wrong if your child is way outside of the typical range for when something should happen. For example, if your 18month old child has already given up their naps but your 8 year old child still needs then this could be a medical problem.
Bereavement
As adults, we know that death is universal, inevitable and basically the end of life. But children’s understanding of death comes gradually.
Children under the age of 5 years:
- Children of this age have little sense of time or distance so final and forever mean nothing
- Dead means less alive
- Death is a sleep or a journey
- Death and life are interchangeable
Children between 5-8 years
-Death is frightening
-Death is final
-Often seen as the end result of maybe violence or aggression
Children from 9 onwards
-Death is perceptible (end of
