Conventions of academic writing are the features of writing that can make the writing easier to read, it helps to put the writing into a format the reader expects and is comfortable with. When undertaking a higher educational course such as the certificate in higher education, it is important to understand different conventions of academic writing. These conventions range from writing correctly, accurate description and critique and evaluation. It is important that what you are writing is correct. All sentences should be complete and punctuated correctly, this helps the students essay to be clear and understandable and lets the audience finish reading without having to stop to understand what the text means. Sentences should never start with a conjunction, words such as ‘and,’ ‘but’ and ‘or’ which are used to join individual words or phrases together. Another convention of academic writing is that you should never end a sentence with a preposition, the definition of a preposition in the oxford dictionary is ‘a word governing, and usually preceding, a noun or pronoun and expressing a relation to another word or element in the clause’ this basically means a word that links nouns, pronouns and phrases to other words in the sentence. For example, ‘the book is beneath the table’ the word beneath is linking the book to the table and therefore is the preposition. In order to write an essay basic skills such as correct grammar are key to being successful, as it makes it easier to understand when everything is spelt correctly. The use of capitals is important and although it will not hinder the content of the text, it is formal and these rules must be adhered too. Using paragraphs is also important as it gives structure to the writing and helps to organise your thoughts. It also breaks the text up so the reader isn’t hit with a large piece of writing.
