Was Jephthah a moral man? This is the question I have been asked and I must determine whether or not Jephthah was a moral man. In order to answer this question there must be an understanding of what a moral act is. A moral act is when someone uses critical thinking and actions to proceed to the next course of action. There are four components to help decide if an act is moral. Moral Sensitivity is one of the crucial elements when determining a moral act. What it simply means; is being able to recognize a situation and clearly understand what moral dimension I am faced with. Moral Judgment is the second piece of the puzzle when determining if an act is moral. Moral Judgment is when a person must look at a situation and gather all the information concerning the issue and make a judgment based on the information gathered. The third piece of the complex puzzle of determining if an act is moral is moral discrimination. I am trying to determine if Jephthah and his actions will be considered a moral act and understand if he was a moral man. Moral Discrimination is the ability to rank the importance of a moral judgment against other claims. So, did Jephthah use moral discrimination in his actions? Before that can be answer I must add the final piece of the puzzle to the equation and that would be moral courage. Jephthah being a proud man was asked to help fight the children of Ammon. This confused Jephthat because it was the same people that casted him out was now asking for his return. Jephthah decided to do what the elders asked him to do but at a cost to him. This is where the question of morality starts to come in to question. What price is to great a price to pay for being moral or immoral? I truly do not believe Jephthah was thinking about this when he as the Lord to deliver all the people he asked to be delivered to him and then promised the Lord he would kill them all. Jephthah could not have known that he had a daughter in those lands that he wanted to destroy. If he had known that I feel like he would not have traveled the path he did. So, where is the moral sensitivity in his action? Jephthah clearly recognized the fact that he had a
