Mongolia is a land-locked country located in North-East Asia bordering China in the south and Russia in the north. Mongolia is located at an altitude of 1500 meters above the sea level. Mongolia has an extreme continental climate. The winter is long with cold temperatures averaging at around -20°C. Summer is much shorter than winter with an average temperature of 20°C (Discover Mongolia). Mongolia is a vast highland with an average altitude of 914 to 1,524 m (3,000 to 5,000 ft.). Mongolia encompasses a long Mountain stretching down the west border, where the peak of Nayramadlin Orgil of the Mongolian Altay Mountains (Mongolia’s highest point) rises to a height of 4,374 m(14,350ft) (Nations Encyclopedia). Forests cover approximately 15% of the country’s territory, made up of mainly pines and birches Steppes and Meadows cover 52% of the Mongolian grounds. Deserts (including the famous Gobi Desert) occupy about 32% of the territory and are covered with sparse vegetation (The Best of Mongolia). Mongolia has an average population of 2.8 million. Population density is one person per 1.6 square km. 68% of the total population are young people under the age of 35. In 1991, Mongolia moved into a democratic system. You must be 18 to vote and there are 3 kinds of elections in Mongolia: a parliamentary election, a presidential election, and a representative election (Discover Mongolia). Mongolia entered 2013 as one of the world’s fastest growing economies, with forecasters predicting GDP growth of
18-20%. Driven by a boom in mining revenues, the impact of this growth is clearly visible in Mongolia’s capital city, Ulaanbaatar, where expensive office high rises, modern apartment buildings, and luxury stores are now common sights, but more than half of the city’s 1.2 million still live without access to even basic public services in the tent areas that are spread around the city (Norovsambuu).
