1. Extended Summary
The aim of this experiment was to bring the theory from fluid mechanics into practise to get further understanding and practical experience of rheology. In order to achieve the actual value of viscosity, response had to be converted into corresponding shear stress. Finally, exhibition of each material measured was identified behaving as shear thinning, shear thickening or Newtonian fluid.
The experiment was carried out by starting calibrate apparatus. Empty measuring cell was placed on the stand and held by the nut screwed on as shown in figure 2-1. Sleeve was pulled down to its snap-in position and fitted with the ball-head of the measuring system.
The power and motor were switched on and the response at this time was adjusted to 0 by turning the knob of zero matching on control instrument, also shown in figure 2-1, to avoid systemic error.
Sunflower oil sample was firstly added in to the measuring cup from the top. Fluid get in to the gap, as marked on figure 2-2.The cell filled with oil was then placed back to the stand and connected to the motor with embedding in the sleeve then the motor is able to trive the bob to rotate and shear the fluids in gaps.Rotating speed can be controlled in 15 speed settings by the push-buttons on the control instrument.
