Mise-en scene
The arrangement of everything that appears in the framing – actors, lighting, décor, props, costume – is called mise-en-scène, a French term that means “placing on stage.” The frame and camerawork are also considered part of the mise-en-scène of a movie. In cinema, placing on the stage really means placing on the screen, and the director is in charge of deciding what goes where, when, and how.

Mise-en scene can be divided into four categories:
Setting and props, costume and make-up, lighting, and figure behaviour or expression.
Setting and props:
This scene (from Serenity) takes place underground in a narrow space, where the crew of serenity have to fight wildly savage humans (Reavers), who eat their victim alive, in order to give their captain enough time to broadcast an important message to the universe. This scene is the final fight in the film. The mood this scene creates is that of despair and hope. Before this scene, all hope seems lost and the ‘heroine’ (River Tam) appears to be overwhelmed, but as this scene shows, she is triumphant and standing over many corpses, in an iconic pose.

Lighting:
This scene casts ‘low-key lighting’ as the only source of light is coming from the hole behind the character, showing a sort of silhouette of her in her pose.
Figure behaviour/expression:
