Case Study/Discussion – Class 1

When you hear the term “information security”, what is it that comes to mind? What exactly are the reasons to secure information (why do you want information secure)? What is the metric to verify security (when do you feel that it is secure)? Who is responsible for information security for an individual, for a business, for a municipality or a government?

The case/article “How Close is World War 3.0” stages the Internet and computer networks as a possible battlefield for attack. The article makes reference to several motivators for attacks. List and describe these motivators and their potential outcomes if executed properly. If there are other motivators not listed, list and describe these.

Rank your list of motivators in order of most threatening to least threatening. Explain your methodology for ranking.

The care/article from the NYT on the military attack notes that the Department of Homeland Security should take the leading role in the defense of civilian systems. Does the technology advances in the past decade, including the global dependence on the Internet, warrant increasing or decreasing public/private partnerships in order to achieve security? Sony recently hired a former DHS official as part of their security team in response to a significant security incident. In light of the pervious question, is this co-incidential?
