Midterm Review

Midterm scheduled for Monday February 13
Worth 100 points.

The midterm will consist of short answer, multiple choice questions, and a slightly longer short response question all relating to all the chapters we’ve covered in the Beebe Handbook. Make sure to have a clear understanding of the main points of each chapter, especially the words and concepts in bold. Additionally, you should be knowledgeable of the following:

Chapters 1 and 3: Speaking in Public and Ethics and Free Speech * Know the differences between public speaking and conversation * Know the communication process (source, message, receiver, etc.) * What is credibility/ethos and why is it important? * What is free speech? What is ethical speech? * What is accommodation and why is it important to be tolerant and recognize cultural differences when giving a speech? * Know the difference between an oral citation and a written citation

Chapters 2 and 4: Audience-Centered Speech-Making and Improving Confidence * Know what it means to adapt to and identify with one’s audience * Know the three general purposes of speeches and what they each entail * What is the specific purpose of a speech? What is the central idea? * What are some reasons why people get nervous about public speaking? * What are different ways a speaker can improve his/her confidence to decrease anxiety/nervousness in giving a speech?

Chapters 5, 6, and 7: Listening, Analyzing your Audience, and Adapting to your Audience * What is critical listening and why is it important? * Know the components that make up the listening process * Know the different ways one can become a better listener * What does it mean to be an active listener? * What are the differences between facts and inferences? * What is reasoning? What is logic? * What are different kinds of evidence that can be used in a speech? * Know the different ways to become an audience-centered speaker (like, knowing the audience’s age, gender, etc.) * What is ethnocentrism? Ethnicity? Race? Culture? Socioeconomic status? * What is psychological audience analysis? (attitudes, beliefs, values)

Chapters 8 and 22: Developing Your Speech and Informative Speeches * What is the general purpose? Specific purpose? Central idea? * What is informative speaking? What are its goals? * What are the different kinds of informative speeches? * What are some strategies to enhance audience understanding in informative speaking? * What are some strategies to maintain audience interest?

Chapter 9: Gathering Supporting Material * What are reasons to do research on a speech topic? * What should you look for when you research online to make sure that a web source is legitimate? * Know the different kinds of ways you can go about doing research (library books, online databases, etc.) *
