Michael Agyby Government Power For Government power, I chose the federal system. I felt that this is the most beneficial system for the citizens. This is because the distribution of power prevents one person or group from gaining too much power, and controlling all affairs. Decisions are made based on the people's needs, and not according to the governments pursuit for power. This ensures that the citizens are treated fairly, and their needs are not compromised because of the governments greed. In the federal system, the government is more aware of what happens locally, therefore action is taken quicker when it comes to urgent matters. If problems are taken care of quicker, the citizens will be happier. This also prevents issues from potentially growing, or causing conflict within the country. Another benefit of the federal system is that if a political party looses at the national level. it can still operate at the regional level. I did not choose the Unitary system because I felt that it gave the government an advantage over the people. The government can be all-powerful. This could potentially result in the compromising of the people's needs for the governments own benefit. The government could make decisions based on its greed, regardless of the effect that it has on the people. This is not fair treatment. The needs of the people should be prioritized. Another reason that I did not choose a unitary system is because since the power is not distributed among regions, local problems are not solved quickly. This would have a great impact on the well being of local regions. For the citizens needs to be met, problems need to be solved quickly. Also, decisions are made according to the will of the government, not the people. If regions in the country have other opinions, they are not considered.
Electoral System The electoral system I chose is proportional representation. This is because it is a more fair election method. In a proportional representation electoral system, less votes are wasted. When thresholds are low, almost all votes are used to elect a candidate. This makes people feel that their vote can actually have an impact, resulting in higher voting rates. Unless the threshold is low, or the district magnitude is high, any political party with a low percentage of votes has the ability to gain representation in legislature. This is necessary in a diverse nation like Canada. This is beneficial for the people because it ensures that all groups are included, and all opinions are heard. Proportional representation allows parties to present diverse lists of candidates. Proportional representation encourages the election of minority representatives. It is encouraged that parties include candidates that appeal to a wide variety of voters. It is also more likely for women to be involved in this political system. I did not choose first past the post because Minority groups do not get their fair share of seats, which is a disadvantage. Another disadvantage is that when a party wins fifty percent of the votes, it gets almost all the seats. This prevents minorities from representation. Where a person stands politically is determined by where they live, not what they believe in. In this system, a large amount of votes go to waste. People may begin to feel that they might as well just not vote since it isn't going to make a difference. In FPTP, one party can still hold power, even if it loses a great amount of support. This system also encourages the development of parties based on ethnicity. Women do not have good chances of being selected in a first past the post electoral system. Political Parties For the political party, I chose a multi party system. I felt that this system is better because a multi-party system allows each citizen to vote for the party that best fits their beliefs and represents their ideology. Canada is a very diverse country. A multi-party system is needed to represent all the different groups
